Nano Banana 2.1 vs Pro vs 2: Which One to Use

Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro compared on Google's own scores, API prices, credits and limits, with a clear pick for each kind of job.

Our Pick, and Who Is Making It

Spicy Studio wrote this comparison. All three models sit side by side in our Image Lab on the same credits, and you should know whose page you're reading.

Default to Nano Banana 2.1. It's Google's newest Nano Banana, it leads every category on Google's own model card, and the Image Lab opens with it.

Bring in Nano Banana Pro for scenes with five recurring people, for work driven by a style reference, or for 4K finals, where it costs 16 credits against 18 for 2.1.

Keep Nano Banana 2 for cheap drafts at 10 credits per 2K image, and for any series you started on it.

What Google's Own Tests Show

Google's model card for Nano Banana 2.1 scores all three, using human side-by-side ratings (Elo) and an automated factuality check. These are the maker's numbers, as of October 2026.

Overall text-to-image preference: 2.1 with thinking 1050, without thinking 1015, Nano Banana 2 990, Pro 935.

Infographic factuality: 2.1 with thinking 0.521, without 0.328, Nano Banana 2 0.179, Pro 0.265.

General editing: 2.1 with thinking 1026, Nano Banana 2 938, Pro 939.

Multi-character consistency: 2.1 with thinking 1106, Nano Banana 2 978, Pro 1011.

Thinking matters: without it, 2.1 loses much of its lead on factual graphics. And Pro trails 2.1 on every row, so its case rests on specific limits and prices, not overall quality.

Specs Side by Side

Release. Pro reached preview on November 20, 2025 and Nano Banana 2 on February 26, 2026; both became generally available on May 28, 2026. Nano Banana 2.1 arrived generally available on October 6, 2026.

Underlying model. Pro builds on Gemini 3 Pro. Nano Banana 2 and 2.1 are Flash models, 2.1 on Gemini 3.6 Flash.

Thinking. Pro always reasons; the API won't switch it off. Nano Banana 2 offers minimal or high, and 2.1 adds a default medium level.

References. Up to 14 on each. Google's docs allow 2 and 2.1 up to 4 character images and 10 object images, and Pro up to 5 character images, 6 object images and 3 style references.

Formats. In Google's API, 2 and 2.1 stretch to 8:1 and 1:8, Pro stops at 21:9, and only Nano Banana 2 has 512px. In Spicy Studio all three render at 2K or 4K in the same ten ratios, from 1:1 to 21:9, as PNG or JPEG.

Price per Image

Google's Gemini API, Standard rate, as of October 2026: - Nano Banana 2.1: $0.0336 at 1K, $0.0504 at 2K, $0.113 at 4K - Nano Banana 2: $0.067 at 1K, $0.101 at 2K, $0.151 at 4K - Nano Banana Pro: $0.134 at 1K or 2K, $0.24 at 4K

Spicy Studio, credits per image, references included: - Nano Banana 2: 10 at 2K, 14 at 4K - Nano Banana 2.1: 12 at 2K, 18 at 4K - Nano Banana Pro: 12 at 2K, 16 at 4K

On Google's API, 2.1 is the cheapest per output image. In Spicy Studio, Nano Banana 2 is the cheapest at both sizes, and Pro undercuts 2.1 at 4K. Input tokens, batch rates and free routes are in Nano Banana 2.1 price.

The Right Model for Each Job

Everyday images and edits: 2.1, for two credits more than Nano Banana 2.

The enhance pass on a video first frame: 2.1, which the playbook's first-frame lesson uses for that step.

One face across a long series: the model the series began on, with the same face reference every time; for a new series, 2.1, which tops Google's multi-character chart. The method is in consistent AI characters.

Group shots with five recurring people: Pro, the only one with five character-reference slots in Google's docs.

Packaging, menus and dense type: run 2.1 and Pro on the same prompt, adding GPT Image 2.5 when the text is small.

Drafts and bulk variations: Nano Banana 2, at 10 credits.

4K finals: Pro at 16 credits if it passes your test, otherwise 2.1 at 18.

Test All Three on Your Own Prompt

Benchmarks can't tell you how a model handles your face, product or typeface. Take one real job, a prompt with a short line of text plus one reference, and run it at 2K on each model in the Image Lab. A round costs 34 credits.

Compare the face with the reference, every letter, hands and small objects, and whether left and right landed where you asked (a known 2.1 weak spot, per Google).

A new account's 25 credits cover two of the three at 2K, and the €2 Spark top-up (90 credits) pays for two more full rounds. More on each model: what's new in Nano Banana 2.1 and the Nano Banana Pro guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nano Banana 2.1 beat Nano Banana Pro?

+

On Google's own model card, 2.1 with thinking outscores Pro in every listed category, including infographic factuality (0.521 vs 0.265). Pro keeps more character-reference slots and dedicated style references, and in Spicy Studio it's cheaper at 4K: 16 credits vs 18.

How is Nano Banana 2.1 different from Nano Banana 2?

+

It's Google's October 2026 update: better quality, text and character consistency by Google's account, a default medium thinking level, tiling fixes on extreme ratios, no 512px size, and about half the API output price at 1K and 2K.

Is Nano Banana 2 being discontinued?

+

Google deprecated it in the Gemini API on October 6, 2026, pointing developers to 2.1, with no shutdown date announced as of October 2026. It's still the Gemini app's free image model and still available in Spicy Studio's Image Lab.

What's the cheapest Nano Banana model in the Image Lab?

+

Nano Banana 2. A 2K image is 10 credits and a 4K image 14, against 12 and 18 for 2.1 and 12 and 16 for Pro. Attaching reference images adds nothing on any of them.
