Nano Banana Pro Guide: Fast Iteration and Where It Fits Now
Nano Banana Pro is Google's Gemini 3 Pro Image model. How to iterate with it in the Image Lab, what it costs, and when Nano Banana 2 or 2.1 is the better pick.
What Nano Banana Pro Is
Nano Banana Pro is Google's Gemini 3 Pro Image model (gemini-3-pro-image in the API), built on Gemini 3 Pro. Google introduced it in preview on November 20, 2025 and made it generally available on May 28, 2026. It reasons before it draws, and the API won't let you turn that off. Google aims it at professional work: complex graphic design, product mockups and data visuals with accurate text.
In Spicy Studio's Image Lab, Nano Banana Pro takes up to 14 reference images and renders at 2K or 4K in ten aspect ratios from 1:1 to 21:9, for 12 credits at 2K or 16 at 4K.
How Fast Is It?
Fast enough to iterate with, which is what counts. The models page lists it as Fast, like Nano Banana 2 and 2.1. We don't publish generation times, because they vary with the prompt, the references, the resolution and provider load.
For pure turnaround, note Google's own positioning: it pitched Nano Banana 2 as Pro-level quality “at lightning-fast speed” and calls 2.1 the more efficient counterpart to Pro. Pro's always-on reasoning is the cost of its precision.
Where Pro Sits Next to Nano Banana 2 and 2.1
Pro was Google's top Nano Banana at launch; with Nano Banana 2 and 2.1 out, it's the specialist.
In the Gemini app, Nano Banana 2 replaced Pro in the model options in February 2026. As of October 2026, 2.1 is the model for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, who can still regenerate an image with “Redo with Pro”.
On Google's scorecard, the Nano Banana 2.1 model card rates 2.1 above Pro in every category, including infographic factuality: 0.521 against 0.265.
In Spicy Studio, Pro matches the default Nano Banana 2.1 at 2K and costs less at 4K, while Nano Banana 2 is the cheapest at 10 or 14 credits. Compare all three in Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2 vs Pro, or read what's new in Nano Banana 2.1.
When Pro Is the Better Pick
Scenes with five recurring people. Google's API docs give Pro five character-reference slots, against four for 2 and 2.1.
Work led by a style reference. Pro is the only Nano Banana with dedicated style references in Google's docs, up to three.
4K finals. A 4K Pro image costs 16 credits, two fewer than 2.1.
A series that began on Pro. Switching models mid-series invites face drift.
For everything else, start on 2.1 and use Pro as a second opinion on hard text or busy layouts.
A Fast Iteration Loop
Speed in practice comes from how you iterate:
1. Lock the composition at 2K. Start short: “Top-down flat lay of a hiking kit on a weathered wooden table: folded paper map, brass compass, steel bottle, wool beanie, soft daylight, the words ‘WEEKEND ROUTES’ in white hand-lettering across the top, 4:5.”
2. Change one variable per run. “Same layout, swap the beanie for a red cap”, then “same layout, low golden light from the right”.
3. Build on the best result. Choose Edit Image to send it back as a reference, or Reuse Prompt to recall the wording.
4. Finish once. Render the keeper at 4K (16 credits) or take it to 8K in Image Upscale for 12.
The reference-numbering approach in Nano Banana 2.1 prompts is the same for Pro, and for dense small type, run GPT Image 2.5 alongside.
