Sora 2 Shut Down: What It Was and the Best Alternatives

Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro are gone: when OpenAI shut them down, what they were known for, and which models now do the same jobs, with costs.

Is Sora 2 Still Available?

No. OpenAI shut Sora down in stages:

March 24, 2026: OpenAI announces the shutdown and notifies developers using the Videos API and the Sora 2 models.

April 2026: the Sora app closes.

September 24, 2026: the Videos API, Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro are removed from OpenAI's API (deprecations page). OpenAI's video generation guide says no one-to-one replacement API is available.

Spicy Studio doesn't offer Sora 2 or Sora 2 Pro, but its Video Lab has models for the same kinds of shots, and your prompts, scripts and source images carry over.

What Sora 2 Was Known For

Sora 2 was OpenAI's text- and image-to-video model. OpenAI's API documentation calls it “flagship video generation with synced audio”: you wrote a prompt or supplied an image, and it returned a clip with sound generated in sync with the picture.

It came in two versions. Sora 2 was the faster one, meant for iterating on ideas, and Sora 2 Pro gave higher-quality results, including 1080p exports. Through the API, an image could act as the first frame and finished videos could be extended. OpenAI also ran a standalone Sora app.

The jobs to replace, then: short clips with sound from a prompt or a still, with cheap iterations before the final render.

The Alternatives, Job by Job

Long clips with sound, or built from references: Seedance 2.5 comes closest to Sora 2's prompt-to-clip-with-sound workflow. It makes 4–30 seconds at 480p, 720p or 1080p with native audio on by default, and takes up to 10 reference images, a 2–30 second reference video or up to 30 seconds of reference audio. A first or last frame can replace the references but not join them. Cost: 10, 22 or 39 credits a second, so 5 seconds is 50, 110 or 195 (Seedance 2.5 guide).

High-fidelity single shots up to 4K: Google's Veo 3.1 makes a fixed 8-second clip from text or a start image, with an optional end frame, in 16:9 or 9:16, for 80, 110 or 200 credits at 720p, 1080p or 4K (Veo 3.1 guide).

Controlled motion from a still: Kling 3.0 animates a required start frame, with an optional end frame, for 5 or 10 seconds. Standard (720p) costs 12 credits a second and Pro (1080p) 16, or 18 and 24 with sound (Kling 3.0 guide).

Several beats in one clip: Kling Omni O3 splits a 3–15 second clip into chained segments, each with its own prompt and at least 3 seconds long, so five at most. Standard costs 14 credits a second and Premium 19, or 19 and 24 with sound (Kling Omni O3 guide).

Cheaper drafts: Seedance 2.0 makes 5–15 seconds at 480p or 720p for 7 or 15 credits a second, with optional audio (Seedance 2.0 guide).

All of them side by side: AI video generators compared.

How to Move a Sora Prompt to Another Model

Most of a Sora prompt carries over; what moves is the settings and the sound.

Order the shot. Subject first, then the action step by step, then camera, light and style.

Give sound its own line. Seedance 2.5 makes audio by default, so end the prompt with “Sound:” and list what should be heard. On Kling 3.0 and Kling Omni O3, switch sound on, which raises the per-second price.

Set length and shape in the controls, not the prompt: duration, aspect ratio and resolution.

Split long stories into Kling Omni O3 segments or several clips cut together.

Reuse your stills. Attach an image you animated before as the first frame in Seedance, Kling or Veo (image-to-video guide). To keep a character consistent across shots, give Seedance reference images instead, and only use faces you have permission to use.

One prompt, rewritten for Seedance 2.5:

Before: “Cozy cabin in a snowstorm, cinematic, man reading by the fire, cat sleeping, wind howling.”

After: “Inside a log cabin at night during a snowstorm. A man in his 50s reads in an armchair by the fireplace while a gray cat sleeps on the rug. Slow push-in from the doorway. Warm firelight, snow streaking past the window. Sound: crackling fire, wind gusts, a page turning.”

At 10 seconds and 720p that run costs 220 credits, so draft it first at 5 seconds and 480p for 50. More patterns: Seedance prompt guide.

Getting Started on a Budget

New accounts get 25 free credits, no card needed. That won't buy a clip (the cheapest, 5 seconds of Seedance 2.0 at 480p, costs 35), but it covers a first frame in the Image Lab: Nano Banana 2.1 makes one for 12 credits at 2K. Next, the €2 Spark top-up adds 90 credits that never expire, or the €10 Spicy Basic plan gives you 600 a month (pricing).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sora 2 shut down?

+

Yes. OpenAI announced the shutdown on March 24, 2026, closed the Sora app in April 2026 and removed Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro from its API on September 24, 2026.

Can I still use Sora 2 Pro?

+

Not from OpenAI: it removed sora-2-pro from its API along with sora-2 on September 24, 2026. Spicy Studio doesn't offer Sora 2 or Sora 2 Pro either.

What is the best Sora 2 alternative?

+

It depends on the shot: Seedance 2.5 for clips of up to 30 seconds with native audio and references, Veo 3.1 for 8-second shots up to 4K, and Kling 3.0 or Kling Omni O3 for controlled motion from a start frame.

Is there a Sora alternative that generates sound?

+

Yes. Seedance 2.5 makes audio by default and Seedance 2.0 on request, both at no extra cost; Kling 3.0 and Kling Omni O3 charge more per second with sound.
