How to Upscale AI Video to 4K, Step by Step

A step-by-step workflow for upscaling AI-generated video to 1080p, 2K or 4K: when to upscale, which target to pick, what it costs and how to avoid artifacts.

Generate Small, Finish Big

A 5-second clip at 480p costs a fraction of the same clip at 1080p, and when you're still testing prompts, most of your generations will be thrown away. That's the case for a two-step workflow: explore at a low resolution, then upscale only the take you actually use.

AI video models balance motion, consistency and resolution, so many clips come out at 480p or 720p. A dedicated upscaler then rebuilds detail frame by frame while keeping it consistent from one frame to the next, so the result doesn't shimmer or flicker.

Step 1: Get the Clip Right First

Upscaling magnifies whatever is there, flaws included. Fix these at the generation stage in the Video Lab before you spend credits on resolution:

Warped hands or faces in motion: simplify the movement or regenerate.

Objects that appear or vanish: add "no new objects" to the prompt, or use a last frame to pin the ending.

A soft first frame: if you animated an image, make it sharper first. Run it through Image Upscale (2K, 4K or 8K for 8, 10 or 12 credits) before animating.

If you're choosing a model for a clip you plan to upscale, our AI video generators comparison covers the trade-offs.

Step 2: Pick the Target Resolution

1080p (16 credits): the right target for most social video and Shorts, and the biggest visible jump from a 480p source.

2K (28 credits): extra headroom if you'll crop or reframe in your editor.

4K (56 credits): for YouTube uploads meant to be watched on large screens, client deliverables and footage you'll mix with 4K camera material.

The price is per video, not per second, so a 3-second clip and a 15-second clip cost the same. Clips longer than 15 seconds have to be trimmed or split first, since the upscaler accepts 3 to 15 seconds (up to 50 MB).

Step 3: Upscale and Review

Open Video Upscale, upload the clip (3 to 15 seconds, MP4, WebM or MOV), choose the target and start the job. The ByteDance Video Upscaler handles live action, animation and vertical shorts, and focuses on recovering detail and keeping it stable across frames.

When it's done, review it full screen at 100% rather than on a phone preview. Watch moving edges such as hair and hands, fine repeating patterns like fabric or brick, and any text in the frame. If something looks off, go back to the generation rather than upscaling the upscale.

Step 4: Export Without Throwing the Quality Away

Edit with the upscaled file, not the original, so captions and cuts sit on the sharper footage. Export from your editor at the same resolution you upscaled to, and keep your editor's export bitrate generous: a 4K upload squeezed through a low-bitrate export can look worse than a clean 1080p one.

Matching resolutions also matters when you cut AI clips together with your own footage. Upscale every AI clip to your timeline's resolution so nothing looks softer than the shots around it.

What the Whole Workflow Costs

An example: four test generations of a 5-second Seedance 2.0 clip at 480p (35 credits each, 140 total), then one 4K upscale of the keeper (56) comes to 196 credits, against 300 for four takes at 720p before any upscaling. New accounts get 25 free credits on sign-up; plans start at €10 for 600 credits on the pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you upscale AI-generated video to 4K?

+

Yes. Upload the clip to Video Upscale and choose 4K. It costs 56 credits per video; 1080p is 16 and 2K is 28.

Should I generate at high resolution or upscale later?

+

For exploration, generating at 480p or 720p and upscaling only the clip you keep is usually cheaper. If a model offers the resolution you need natively and you already have a final prompt, generating at that resolution is also fine.

Does upscaling fix glitches in AI video?

+

No. Upscaling sharpens what's there, glitches included. Fix warped hands, flicker or appearing objects at the generation stage, then upscale.

Is video upscaling priced per second?

+

No. On Spicy Studio it's priced per video by target resolution: 16 credits for 1080p, 28 for 2K and 56 for 4K.
